Aside from the handling and the time it takes to care for our horses, other necessities are required to keep them happy and healthy. We must maintain their living space and provide feed, bedding, shoeing, dressing, grooming, transport, and tend to medical needs. Plenty is required, so please take your time, look around, and learn all there is to know about us. We hope you enjoy our site and take a moment to help us in any way you can. Please feel free to drop us a line.
There are certain monthly costs to house and feed our horses; board, bedding, and feed.
We want to thank Valley Brook Equestrian Center for honoring our nonprofit status to help with our costs by reducing the monthly board fees. The listed boarding costs are for both Remi and Ice.
Bedding promotes horse health by offering soft, clean, warm grounds to live in. Bedding should be maintained at 6 - 12 inches with banked sides to help prevent a horse from casting. Our horse stalls are cleaned twice daily, and the bedding is replenished monthly with pine pellets.
AHTF believes in 3 daily feedings for horses who do not live on grazing pasture land. The standard boarding facility feeds twice daily, so we supplement our horses with additional daily feedings to promote healthy digestion. We only provide high-quality alfalfa, grass, and Timothy hay or pellets, depending on the specific horse.
Like people, horses need specific vitamins and nutrients to help with optimal health. This will include daily vitamins, joint supplements, and weekly warm bran mashes for each horse. Costs will vary depending on the horse because horses have individual health needs.
Horses have health expenses that need tending to. Each horse has needs, from the farrier and dental services to individualized medical attention.
Hoof health is vital. Hooves need to be cared for on an average of every six weeks. We at AHTF say, "the hooves are the heart of the horse." If not correctly managed, hoof imbalance can create severe medical issues. Depending on the horse depends on the type of hoof care required. Costs will vary per horse.
Let's be aware that horses' teeth grow like hooves or human fingernails. Proper care promotes healthy teeth, gums, and digestion and reduces medical issues. Depending on the horse depends on how often their dental needs will be seen—anywhere between every six months to a year. Costs vary depending on the procedure.
Horses need twice-yearly checkups minimum to ensure that specific health concerns are met; blood tests, immunization, and worming. Like any other living creature, they are individuals where medical needs can vary. With horses, a medical slush fund is mandatory to help ensure that they can have the proper medical treatment when needed.
Cost reflection is the minimum for one visit to UC Davis Equine from experience.
In addition, we need to acquire many items to help sustain our horses and their environment.
Many different supplies are needed to care for a horse. Some examples are halters and lead ropes for walking, brushes, combs, and hoof picks for daily grooming, shampoo and conditioner for bathing, blankets, rain, day and fly sheets and masks for protection, and let's not forget exercise equipment, lunge lines, bell boots, polo and leg wraps, These are only a few items needed to help with horse care. There are many more unmentioned supplies.
Cleanliness and barn maintenance are essential for the well-being of our horse's health. The barn, stalls, tack rooms, paddocks, and the surrounding grounds must be kept clean to ensure horse health and safety. The security of our staff and volunteers is just as essential.
Horses must be loaded into a horse trailer and hauled by truck to specific destinations depending on the need. A couple of those reasons are medical or in case of a natural disaster. Thankfully we have a network of people who can haul our horses. Distance dictates the hauling costs.
Ideally, we will need to acquire a truck and trailer for self-reliance.
Our supply needs are ever-changing. Please contact us if you are interested in donating an item-specific. We are in the process of developing our partner's registry with equestrian tack and feed stores.
Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and help horses. Your generous donation will fund our mission.
